Black Heritage Trail

In the late 1990’s thru the early 2000’s Newark’s Branch Brook Park Skating Rink became the creative hub of Jersey Club Music. DJs and dancers transformed the rink into a cultural stage, building a sound that blended house, hip-hop, and Baltimore Club. Brick City Club music was born here. Pioneers such as DJ Tameil and Unicorn151 helped innovate and shape the movement that would spread from Newark to the world, solidifying a legacy. Jersey Club Music is now a global symbol of New Jersey’s Black cultural innovation.

The Beat of a Generation

In the late 1990s through early 2000s, the Terrace Ballroom at Newark Symphony Hall became the epicenter of Newark’s teen party movement. This gave way for a youth-led entrepreneurial movement know as the “Street Team Era”. Every weekend, thousands of youth packed the floor for Jersey Club parties that fused hip-hop, Baltimore Club, and House into a new Newark-born sound known as Brick City Club. DJs such as Torry T and the HittSquad helped define the city’s creative energy, giving rise to a cultural revolution that still moves the world today.

The House that Built the Beat

From the late 1970s through the 1990s, Club Zanzibar stood as Newark’s most iconic music venue and the birthplace of the city’s House / Garage sound. DJs such as Tony Humphries, Kerri Chandler, and Blaze transformed the club into a global beacon of soulful dance music.

The energy and rhythm that filled Zanzibar inspired the next generation fueling the birth of Brick City Club and today’s Jersey Club sound, carrying Newark’s influence around the world.

The Heartbeat of Brick City Club

In the early 2000s, this corner was home to DJ Tameil’s legendary CD stand the only place in the world where authentic Jersey Club mixtapes were sold. Teens, dancers, and producers gathered here to share beats, freestyle, and battle, turning a simple street stand into the creative crossroads of Newark’s music scene.

Broad and Market remains symbolic of the community spirit and innovation that made Jersey Club a voice for Newark’s youth.
